Following the long-awaited upgrade,
by the summer of 2001 Alstom’s new Class 390 Pendolinos were commissioned
and tested on the line. During the period between 2001 and early 2006 various
Serco test trains, mainly Network Rail monitoring trains, also used the new
facility. The only other trains to use the facility were a few Alstom Junipers and 2 ex-Clacton EMU's used by Railtrack for the ERTMS development.
Alstom were never keen to allow competing manufacturers to access the Test Track
and, despite efforts by the local councils, the facility faced an uncertain
