NSE Snowblower

In 1989 Network South Eeast (NSE) invested in a snowblower that literally blew the snow off the track in the wake of the big freeze of 1988 but it sat around in a siding for many years without being used so it was shipped off to Aberdeen where the winters are harsher and it could earn its keep. The high cost wasn't deemed to be worth investing in more at a time when BR was scraping together every penny it could get

This was a Beilhack self-propelled rotary snow blower which can operate at up to 40mile/h when not clearing snow.. It moved to Kilmarnock in 2002. Snow blowing may only take place when traffic on adjacent lines has been stopped.

The snow blower machines feature a built-in turntable allowing them to change the direction of snow clearance.

The machine, 968501 plus support coaches 'Polar Bear' was ADB975486 and formerly a Mk 1 BSK 34100 and 'Ptarmigan' was ADB975464 and formerly a Mk 1 BSK 35171 was ride tested on the test track in 1989
