In 1989 Network South Eeast (NSE) invested in a snowblower that literally blew the snow off the
track in the wake of the big freeze of 1988 but it sat around in a siding for
many years without being used so it was shipped off to Aberdeen where the
winters are harsher and it could earn its keep. The high cost wasn't deemed to
be worth investing in more at a time when BR was scraping together every penny
it could get
This was a Beilhack self-propelled rotary snow blower which can operate at up
to 40mile/h when not clearing snow.. It moved to Kilmarnock in 2002. Snow
blowing may only take place when traffic on adjacent lines has been stopped. The machine, 968501 plus support coaches 'Polar Bear' was ADB975486 and formerly a Mk 1 BSK 34100 and 'Ptarmigan' was ADB975464 and formerly a Mk 1 BSK 35171 was ride tested on the test track in 1989 |
