Coal!

Some pictures of the super pit sunk at Asfordby

In 1987 a new super pit was sunk at AsfordbyIt was the last deep coal mine to be sunk in England and was expected to produce coal for many years, but closed within a few years with geological problems being cited as the issue. The first coal left the mine by train via a spur from the test track direct to Melton Junction in 1991 The geological problems meant production had ceased by 1997
